Life at Cantueso
A journal of twenty-four hours in the Axarquía
The best days here have no itinerary. They unfold — slowly, generously — around the pool, the restaurant terrace, the mountain trails and the coast below. This is how one of them might go.

The day begins before the heat. Step onto your terrace to find Lake Viñuela catching the first light below and the Sierra Tejeda rising behind — and silence, broken only by birdsong. Leave the curtains open the night before; the sunrise costs nothing and delivers everything.

Breakfast on the terrace of your cottage, at your own pace — local bread, olive oil pressed in the valley, fresh-squeezed orange juice and pastries. Eat with the lake in front of you and the mountains behind. Nobody is watching the clock.

The infinity pool holds the cool of the night until late morning. Swim a few lengths, then lie on a sunbed with a book while the water reflects the sky and the Axarquía villages dot the hillsides below. The finca is quiet. The day is entirely yours.

Some guests never leave the finca — the pool, the olive grove, the hammock under the fig tree are reason enough. Others want mountains or sea. Here are three ways the afternoon could go.

On foot · from the gate
Trails start directly at the gate. Routes run through lavender, wild herbs and cork oak, from gentle valley walks to full-day mountain ascents where the sea appears on the horizon. We keep a list of favourites for every pace and can point you towards the right one.

45 min by car
The Balcón de Europa is a short walk from wherever you park. Below it, Calahonda cove hides between the cliffs. Eat espetos on the sand — sardines grilled over an open fire — and swim until the afternoon light shifts. Back at the finca in time for dinner.

1 hour by car
The Picasso Museum, the Roman Theatre and the Moorish Alcazaba — pick two, leave the rest for the streets. The old quarter rewards slow walking. Bring something back from the Mercado de Atarazanas: local olives, dried figs, a bottle of Axarquía Moscatel.

The terrace looks out over the lake and the valley beyond. The kitchen works with what the hills and coast provide — expect dishes built around seasonal vegetables, local fish and the estate's own olive oil. The wine list takes the Axarquía seriously. Order slowly and see what the afternoon brings.
See the menu

The afternoon crowd — small as it is — has thinned. Walk the olive grove paths around the finca as the light turns gold across the valley. The pool empties; the terrace fills. A glass of Moscatel, the lake catching the last colours of the day. There is no agenda and no reason to invent one.

The restaurant takes on a different quality in the evening: candles, the lake lost in darkness beyond the terrace, the mountains pale against the sky. Order the tasting menu and let the kitchen decide the night. Someone at the table will say we should come back.

No street lights reach this far into the hills. The Milky Way appears, improbably vivid, once the terrace quiets. Stars are the last thing you see before sleep — and the first thought that surfaces at breakfast tomorrow.
