As spring blossoms in Periana, the town comes alive with a vibrant celebration of its most cherished product: Verdial olive oil. This golden elixir, derived from ancient olive trees cultivated using traditional techniques, takes centre stage during the annual Verdial Olive Oil Festival.
The Verdial Olive Oil Fair — locally known as Día del aceite verdial — is a two-day extravaganza held in April that showcases the region's prized olive oil. Of the 1,000 olive varieties grown worldwide, the Verdial de Velez is unique to Axarquía, harvested from January to March, producing an oil with distinctive golden hues and a remarkably mild flavour.
One of the highlights of the festival is the traditional millworker's breakfast, known as desayuno molinero — freshly baked bread drizzled with Verdial olive oil.
Aceite Periana offers bespoke olive oil tastings combined with hikes through groves of ancient olive trees. The crown jewel is their extra-virgin olive oil El Milenario, crafted exclusively from trees over a thousand years old.
The Feria de Agosto, held from August 23rd to 25th, is a testament to the town's rich cultural heritage. Food stalls line the streets with migas, gazpacho, and tortilla de patatas. The air fills with the lively rhythms of flamenco and sevillanas.
The Día del Melocotón celebrates Periana's most prized agricultural product. Local chefs and home cooks showcase their culinary prowess by creating innovative dishes featuring the star ingredient: Periana's luscious peaches.
The San Isidro Festival, honouring the patron saint of farmers, typically takes place in May. The streets come alive with parades, open-air dances, and concerts, followed by a solemn mass and procession.
Christmas celebrations commence with La Nochebuena, marked by family gatherings and midnight mass. A distinctive feature of local celebrations involves the use of zambombas, unique percussion instruments crafted from flower pots.
La Noche Vieja brings the unique custom of las uvas de la Suerte — eating twelve lucky grapes, one with each chime of the clock at midnight.
